At this point, there is a recounting of the the journey from Egypt to their current resting place of Shittim on the plains of Moab. The first sixteen verses of this chapter review what has already been documented, from Egypt to Sinai, but after this we see the details of another journey. The date given for the death of Aaron reveals that from this generation’s ultimate rebellion in chapter fifteen, thirty-eight years pass until the fatal sin of Moses in chapter twenty. This section closes in verse forty-nine with a review of the destruction of the three Canaanite cities.
The final portion of the journey’s review is important, for as Yahweh is about to give the definitions of the land, He commands to annihilate the current inhabitants for the sake of the Israel’s faithfulness. The recent mini-conquest should serve as a model for the coming war, and give the people confidence in the power of Yahweh to fulfill His word. God closes with the threat that if they conform to the culture of these people rather than the purpose of their God, He will give Israel the same fate as the sinners of the lands.
Yahweh does then detail the borders of the land. We should not forget the true size the land sworn to the fathers. Joshua and Eleazar will apportion the territory among the tribes upon its taking, and a leader from each tribe is chosen to aid in this task. We continue to see the theme of structure, delegation, and shared responsibility as expedient for the accomplishment of an aim.
May we also remember the faithfulness of God, as we strive together to love Him and walk in His ways.
