15:4-5; 16:20 “Yahweh your God will surely bless you in the land which Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, if only you will listen obediently to the voice of Yahweh your God… Righteousness! Righteousness you shall pursue, that you may live in the land which Yahweh your God is giving you.”

Moses continues to instruct the people on how they are to be and live in the promised land. After warning Israel to destroy the temptations of foreign gods, he restates procedures that will protect the people against complacency and pride in their abundance. From the animals they are permitted to eat, to tithes and feasts and loving the needy, they must gratefully obey God and give generously as Yahweh has generously given to them. These practices acknowledge that Yahweh is the one who blesses their work, and they facilitates the people’s faith that God will continue to empower them to prosper.

Just as the people are to reflect the fact that their God is the Creator and source of every good thing, so also they must mirror His character and live righteously. The people will have leaders of integrity in the form of judges, officers, priests, and eventually a king, who will all live and teach and judge according to the statutes of the Law.

One response to “3.16.24: Deuteronomy 14-17”

  1. The main themes of today’s reading for us are righteousness and gratitude. God is showering blessings on the Israelis. Every possible benefit is offered to them and all they have to do is follow righteousness in their behaviors as it is modeled on God. Moses makes it very clear that they must guard their attitudes against pride and complacency. They must also give with the same generosity that God gave to them to help those less fortunate. Gratitude to God for His guide to the Promised Land is essential in the structure of their daily lives. It seems to us that this guide to living the Christian life is also very relevant today.
